Iconic videos from the ages

Queen - I Want To Break Free

"I Want To Break Free" is a song by a British rock band Queen, from their eleventh studio album 'The Works' (1984). Written by bassist John Deacon.

The song is largely known for its music video, for which all the band members dressed in women's clothing.

Genre characteristics
From the video its hard to tell its a rock song, as all the band members are dressed in women's clothes. But when it comes to the instruments you can hear the stereotypical electric guitar with an ongoing beat with he drum set. And although this is narrative based, you can argue this is also performance based, as visuals of the band are seen of them singing.

Relationship between lyrics and the visuals
In my own opinion i feel that there isn't much connection. But others can argue there is, as you can see at the beginning the band are note enjoying there time at home, but then they open the cupboard door, and they become themselves, they 'break free' from their home self.

Voyeurism/Male gaze
There isn't any voyeurism in this video.

Intertextuality
From the beginning of the video, it starts off with the top of the houses, showing the roofs and chimneys. You can say that this could be a parody of Coronation Street's opening.

Star Image
In the video Freddie Mercury is wearing a Madonna bra, as well as women's clothes. This is quite different to what he and the band would normally wear, and back in those days, it would be shocking as it was not normal for men to do that openly. You could also say that as Freddie Mercury is known for his bushy moustache and hairy chest, in this video his chest seems clear from the hair which changes his star image (more goes against it).
